Be careful what you wish for …

A much needed break …

I needed a break, a summer vacation if you will. The universe heard me and did not qualify the words … did not distinguish the difference from a summer vacation wherein we frolic and enjoy fun in the sun, carefree days and lazy nights from a break from something you actually wanted to do … or from … someone you wanted to spend time with.

I meant to be alone for a few days, a couple of weeks … okay … I wanted to be in peace for the end of summer at least. Time to read and edit and plan for my next submission, send sample chapters to readers, catch up on my indie project, redesign my blog format, upload new pictures and wallow in wonderful drafts and plots … devilish villains and delightful red herrings. I intended to cross genre myself into nirvana.

Be careful what you wish for …

All I wished for was a vacation from the blog, from commenting on other blogs, from social networking and the internet.

And the universe in its infinite wisdom sent me a break from all things modern and electronic. My computer died … again.

While my daughter chastised me in stereo for being a lame brain and not having the proper protection (you want to talk role reversal with your kids?) I spent my hard-earned vacation dollars on “geeks” from a squad of kids young enough to be my grandchildren … from techies who live twelve thousand miles from my solitary work space … and I shelled out more time and worries.

The days rushed by in a struggle to catch up with my journals and those dozen or more books lined up to be read … the deadline of September 25, 2013 and my triumphant return to fOIS In The City loomed overhead like a specter … a bird circling road kill.

Because I failed to provide the universe specific and copious details it is now five-fifty-one in the am EST and the four Fall posts meant for your reading enjoyment were never written.

Those Christmas listings that were to begin in June and be completed by September to dazzle my on-line shoppers are half done. The second half is, of course, the hardest part and waits for my in the garden shed and craft closet.

Only four of my dozen books were read and the first selection for our October book club, which I forgot to order from the library, awaits my undivided attention.

to-do-list

What happens next …

If I only knew then what I know now. Well get over it. You don’t get a do-over in life. You mess up, you pay. Often, when you do good, you pay more.

And as the man said (in the longest prose chapters I have ever read) … you can’t go home again so you might as well move down the road to your next adventure.

Trust that all those screw-ups taught you something. Or at least learn enough to not mess with the universe and for the love of Hannah … learn to ask proper questions.

I learned a couple-few-things on my blog vacation. It’s not only important to learn and ask the proper questions, it is most important to listen to the answer.

And there you have it my trusted readers, you are the few, the brave, those who weathered each storm with me for four years …

I call myself  fOIS In The City :  I am a writer of women’s fiction and mysteries in several sub genres. My stories are about NYC women on the edge of discovery, danger and fun.

In the thirteen weeks before Christmas I will dazzle you with my flash fiction, city scapes and more of my fractured wisdom.

What say you? What have you been up to while I was on vacation?

And what questions do you send out to the universe?

  1. Love this, Florence. Like Lennon said, “Life is what happens when we’re busy making other plans.” or my favorite “Man plans, God laughs.” Yeah, that.

    Good to see you back!!!!

  2. Often, when you do good, you pay more. Love that line! Florence, your post sounds like my life, that thing that happens when we’re making other plans. Bravo for aiming high. Focus on what you did accomplish, and write that list. You read four books in the midst of a busy summer, that’s awesome. If you ticked off everything on your list, then you’d have aimed too low. If you’re gonna aim, aim for the sky. it’s hard to miss!

  3. Happy news that you are back! And consider what you DID accomplish this summer, because it is considerable. Fixing what’s broken is a victory. You come into the fall refreshed and rejuvenated, and it sounds like you are ready to write big.

  4. Glad to see you back, Florence, but sorry to hear of your computer woes. I hate having computer problems. They’re ever too time-consuming and seem like a waste of one’s time and money, but I can’t imagine life without my computer so…. I look forward to reading your future posts, as always…

    • So glad to be back, Patti. My daughter informed me that “normal” people don’t have so many problems with their computers. I suppose it’s late in the game to think I might become “normal” and so I’ll rely on the geeks to help me get through this new transition.

      Thanks, I missed you 🙂

Thrilled to have you back, but I’m even more thrilled you took time for yourself. Maybe once everything calms down again you could take your originally planned social media break and get everything done you wanted to?

    • Christi, now that I am settling, my daughter has just left to go back to NYC and I am in my office looking at my bulletin board … I will indeed get everything done. I might like doing it all with the social media stuff also 🙂

  6. Florence,

Like you I thought to take a brief summer vacation, but life once again reared its head with much different ideas. I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever get back to regular Sunday posting on my blog though I am trying to get updates there now. I guess this is fate’s way of saying “Be happy! At least you’re not 6 feet under or a blubbering idiot!”

And I am progressing on my next Dessert Dames novel which is WF also and the first 2 in the series are finally catching on. 🙂 Color me happy.

  7. The graphic is awesome, Florence. And frownie face over computer disaster. I am tired of social media as well and keep hammering away. There has to be another answer for me. But good news as of today thru Sunday, I am wedding holiday mode. I might check. Might not. I’m going to have some fun time for #1 son’s wedding.

  8. Wonderful to have you back, Florence! It’s amazing how if you don’t take a vacation, Life will kick you upside the head and force you to take one. Obviously Life thought you needed to be electronics-free for a while. I’m mostly taking a vacation this month, too, enforced by unexpected surgery. Again, Life made the decision for me. So back to nap and lie in the September sun…

    • Anne, that is so true. If we haven’t got the good sense to know when to stop then life will certainly take the break for us. I trust your health will be back to full blast soon. I will miss you while you are on hiatus 🙂

  9. Ah, just when you’re seeking some peace and tranquility, boom! 🙂 Welcome back, Florence. It’s great to hear your voice again. I’m sorry for your computer woes. Those darn machines have a habit of biting us in the butt-end just when we’re requiring their services most. As to what I’ve been doing while you’ve been gone … final edits, book cover, blurb, etc for my October release. Woot, it’s almost done!

  10. You know it’s funny how those summers fly by, taking half of our to-do lists with them! As a teacher, I get the summers off, of course . . . never accomplish all my grand plans either. I DID manage to finish writing 18 Truths 🙂

  15. I can not tell you what I’ve been up to while I’ve been gone, Florence.

Some is too inane to mention. Some days were like deer-in-the-headlights (cliché alert!) days when asked what I accomplished. Some days were excellent writing days. Every day was a get-‘er-done for Golden Heart day.

Greaaaat to have to you back!
